The LPGA Tour is expected to announce it will drop two to three events and $4 million to $5 million in prize money from its 2009 schedule amid the nation's economic downturn, the New York Times reported Wednesday Nov. 19, 2008. Bivens said events that will be taken off next year's schedule include the $1.8 million SemGroup Championship and the $2.6 million Ginn Tribute hosted by Annika Sorenstam.

The LPGA Tour will offer three fewer official events in 2009, the latest result of the global economic downturn and its effect on pro sports. The 2009 schedule released Wednesday has 31 events -- 20 in the United States and 11 internationally -- not including the Solheim Cup. Tournaments off the schedule include the ADT Championship, which starts Thursday and closes this year's slate.

John Daly shot a 2-under 68 on Thursday to finish four strokes behind leader Liang Wen-chong halfway through the first round of the Hong Kong Open. Daly was 4 under with two holes to play, but bogeyed his final two holes to drop back in the event sanctioned by the European and Asian tours. "I'm not too disappointed, being a little rusty.

Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng shot a 4-under 67 Saturday to take a two-stroke lead at the Dunlop Phoenix tournament. Marksaeng birdied the first and last holes at the par-71 Phoenix Country Club, and had three birdies and a bogey in between to finish the third round at 8-under 205, two strokes ahead of second-round leader Tomohiro Kondo of Japan.

Oliver Wilson made six birdies and held off a charge from Bernhard Langer to take a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the Hong Kong Open. Wilson, who has a habit of finishing second, shot a 5-under 65 for a three-round total of 13-under 197, a shot better than Taiwan's Lin Wen-tang (64). Langer had a 63 and was two back of the leader.
